Brokeback Breakdown
So Tara and I went to see Brokeback Mountain last night. We've been wanting to go for a while, and finally managed to get our butts in gear. (We had a great time btw. [yay you found your earring!])
I was especially anxious to see it since Oprah had the cast on the show last Friday and just gushed continuously about how amazing the movie is. The Academy seems to have agreed with her incidentally. Anyway, perhaps all this buildup led to my minor disappointment.
I liked the movie. I don't think I have anything bad to say about it. I think Ennis was a tragic character, never being able to accept himself and his own taboos, and yes, it was sad that they never actually made it. Tara was touched by the way things all turned out, and managed to shed a couple (read several) tears. But I was left with the feeling of: "Eh"
I get that its a "groundbreaking" film, and that it is serving the purpose of breaking down assumptions and prejudices. But when I'm prepared to be all shocked and blown-away, and I'm not, I feel a little duped.
But again, I liked it, I'll recommend it, I'll be happy if the film wins Academy's for Best Acting (Kudos to Michelle Williams), and I'll probably rent it when it comes to dvd. It just won't sit on my list of all time favorite movies.
On a final note, whoulda thought they'd look so convincingly in love? It was kinda hot.
